Signs you need an electrician

  • A socket sparks, buzzes or feels warm
  • Scorch marks round a socket or a plug
  • A switch that does nothing, or works only sometimes
  • Loose sockets coming away from the wall
  • Extension leads everywhere because there are too few sockets

What the electrician does

  • Replaces damaged sockets and switches
  • Adds new sockets, with their own cable back to the fuse box where needed
  • Fits outdoor and bathroom sockets that are safe for damp
  • Changes old two-pin sockets to earthed ones (Schuko)

Before the electrician comes

  1. If a socket sparks or smells of burning, switch off its breaker in the fuse box and do not use it.

  2. Count how many sockets or switches you want changed or added, and where.

  3. Take a photo of the socket and of the fuse box. It helps the electrician bring the right parts.

What it costs

Every electrician sends a written price, with IVA, before any work starts. You can compare up to three.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my UK plugs?

Portugal uses Schuko sockets (type F, 230 V). Use a proper adapter for the odd appliance. For many, an electrician can change the plugs or add sockets.

Is a warm socket dangerous?

Yes, it can be. A warm or discoloured socket usually means a loose connection or too much load. Stop using it and ask an electrician to look.

How much does it cost?

Changing a socket or a switch usually costs €30 to €60 for the first one and less for each extra one, before IVA. A new socket with its own cable is often €60 to €150.
