When you may need one

  • The supplier asks for an inspection before connecting a new contract
  • The home has been without electricity for a long time
  • The installation was changed or the power increased
  • A buyer, a bank or a tenant asks for proof the installation is safe
  • Solar panels or an EV charger are being added

What the electrician does

  • Checks the installation and fixes what would fail
  • Gives you the termo de responsabilidade for work they did
  • Books the inspection with an inspection body (EIIEL) when one is required
  • Explains the result in plain English

Before the electrician comes

  1. Ask your electricity supplier or E-REDES exactly which document they need.

  2. Find the CPE code on an old bill or the meter. It identifies the supply point.

  3. Make sure the electrician can reach the meter, the fuse box and every room.

What it costs

Every electrician sends a written price, with IVA, before any work starts. You can compare up to three.

Frequently asked questions

Is a certificate needed to sell a home?

Not for the deed itself. But buyers, banks or a new electricity contract can ask for one, and a home without power for a long time often needs an inspection before reconnection. Our guide explains the cases.

Who issues it?

For most homes, the electrician who did or checked the work signs a termo de responsabilidade. When an inspection is required, it is done by an inspection body (EIIEL) recognised by DGEG.

How much does it cost?

An inspection usually costs €100 to €200. Any repairs needed to pass are quoted separately.
