Installing an EV charger at home in Portugal
Wallbox power, contracted power, the rules for a garage in a condominium, costs and support: what to sort out before an electrician fits your charger.
Wallbox or a normal socket?
A normal socket charges slowly and is not designed for hours of full load. A wallbox is a dedicated charger on its own circuit and protection. The common home size is 7.4 kW on a single-phase supply; 11 kW and 22 kW need a three-phase supply. At 7.4 kW, taking a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% takes about five hours.
Contracted power
For a 7.4 kW charger, at least 10.35 kVA of contracted power is usually recommended; 6.9 kVA can work, but the power may cut when the oven or heaters run at the same time.
Raising the contracted power is arranged with your supplier and is commonly quoted at about €30 to €80. A smart charger can lower its speed when the rest of the home is using power.
In a condominium garage
Under Decreto-Lei 93/2025, you do not need a vote of the owners' meeting to install a charger in your own space. You must tell the administrator in writing at least 30 days before, with your unit, the parking space, a short technical description and the start date.
The condominium can only object on limited grounds, such as a shared charging solution already serving the building or one it commissions within 90 days, a safety risk, blocking the garage or changing the look of the building.
Who pays for the electricity
- Connected to your own meter: you pay it on your own bill.
- Connected to the common-area supply: a sub-meter records what you use and you pay the condominium back.
- A shared system for the building: its cost is split by each owner's share, and each user pays for their own charging.
Costs and support
Supplied and fitted, a home charger is commonly about €800 to €2,000, depending on the charger and the distance from the fuse box. For 2026, the Fundo Ambiental support found in published guides is for condominiums installing shared charging, not for individual houses. Check the current calls before you count on any support.
Public charging
The Mobi.E network is Portugal's public charging network, with its own card or app. A charger in your own garage is private and does not need to join it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission?
For a charger in your own house or parking space, generally not. In a condominium, follow the 30-day written notice above.
Can the electrician handle the condominium paperwork?
Many will prepare the short technical description for the notice. Sending it to the administrator is your part, as the owner or tenant.
Do I get a declaration for the work?
Yes. Ask for the termo de responsabilidade for the new circuit and keep it with the fatura.
